Jen Bowmast – Unlikely Unions, 2016, SELECT 16, Ilam Campus Gallery, Christchurch
I am interested in how space we inhabit, both real and imagined, transforms into place. Do we perpetually catalogue remembered ritualised spaces transitioning them into our own places? These objects are physical manifestations of the abstract idea of space to place transition. The work asks the questions: What does the taxonomy of the mental spaces we make for ourselves look like? If the place were an object, what would it look like? These Unlikely Unions of everyday objects are miniature monuments from an elsewhere space connecting with each other in a secretive conversation.
